Seventeen youth and three
adults journeyed to the Los Angeles area, July 8-18, for the 2005
senior high mission trip. The group had some awesome
experiences--learning and serving Christ’s people.
The day after they arrived in
L.A., the group toured the Universal Studios theme park in
Hollywood. On Sunday, July 10, they worshipped in a lively
African-American congregation of the ELCA, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
of Inglewood. That afternoon they followed the “Walk of the Stars,”
Hollywood Boulevard, and some youth were able to catch a glimpse of
actor Johnny Depp, who came to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre for the
premiere of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The mission trip experience
itself happened July 10-15, during which time the group stayed at
Silverlake Community Church. They were led by a fantastic
team of on-site leaders from the YouthWorks organization. Our
Savior’s youth were accompanied by senior high youth from Cross in the
Desert United Methodist Church, Phoenix, Arizona.
During the mission experience
the member of the group
- Led Bible stories, singing, games and art projects at a
Kids Club at Silverlake Church
- Provided volunteer staffing at several area youth centers
- Helped prepare and serve food at a number of shelters for
the homeless in the Skid Row area of downtown L.A.
- Learned about homelessness in the metropolitan
area—including the fact that 38% of all homeless persons in the USA
live in and around Los Angeles.
Evenings were filled with good
food, games, outings and worship experiences. Some of the outings
took the OSLC folks to Griffith Park, the Santa Monica
Pier, and a warehouse that stores old sets from movies.
Following the mission trip
experience, the OSLC group stayed two nights at a motel in Irvine,
California. Their final weekend included a day at Laguna Beach, a nice
supper out, and worship at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove,
CA.
The mission
trip participants say a big “thank you” to the many family, friends and
OSLC members who have helped them out in so many ways. Between mid-April and late June they were
able to raise nearly $18,000 to cover the expenses of this
life-changing mission trip.
MIDNIGHT
MISSION
One of our favorite missions
among the 80,000 homeless persons in the greater Los Angeles area was
the Midnight Mission. Here we see homeless men receiving
food and drink at one of the “mobile kitchens” sponsored by the
Midnight Mission. (Note: This photo is taken from the
Midnight Mission website—OSLC members didn’t take photos of the
homeless people they were serving, out of respect for their privacy.)
DRIP,
DRIP, DROP!
Children from the Alegria Youth
Center join with mission trip participants from OSLC and Cross in the
Desert United Methodist Church of Phoenix, AZ, in a lively game of
“drip, drip, drop” on a HOT afternoon in Los Angeles.
THE
SUN GOES DOWN OVER SANTA MONICA
A number of OSLC youth
saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time on the evening of July 13 when
we spent some time at the famous Santa Monica pier and beach.
KIDS
CLUB
Every day neighborhood
children from the Alegria Youth Center came to our host church,
Silverlake Community Church, for an afternoon of Bible stories,
singing, games and art projects. Here’s Tiffany Motis (lower
right) and Christy Eickhoff (upper right corner) helping the Kids Club
participants do some watercolor art.
WHAT
HAPPENS TO BAD MISSION TRIP KIDS
During our closing
cookout on July 14, we were able to tour the “old” Los Angeles zoo—and
even pose for photos in the abandoned monkey cages!
